The never ending issue of pot holes in the roads around the county raised its head again this week at the September meeting of Ballina Electoral Area. Fine Gael councillor Eddie Staunton told the meeting this week, “potholes are my major problem, it’s getting worse and worse by the week. Is there anything that we can do, because we get some filled and then they are back again. It’s getting close to winter now and if we have one like the last two we’ll have serious problems.” Cllr Staunton’s issue was backed by his party colleague Cllr Jarlath Munnelly who said, “we need to have this sorted by now, because come November or December we won’t be able to get it sorted if the cold weather comes like we’ve seen before.”

The main message from last week’s special meeting of Mayo County Council to discuss the implications of the potential job cuts in Mayo County Council was lost in a war of words and point scoring by the local politicians inside the chamber. At the outset of the meeting, county manager Peter Hynes told the members that there will be no enforced redundancies in the council and that they will be dealing with the issue within the confines of the Croke Park agreement. The elected members of Mayo County Council were forced to vote in a new member of the local authority to sit on the governing authority of the National University of Ireland, Galway this week. The vacancy on the governing authority at the third level institution came about after the council executive received correspondence from the university which informed them that Cllr Henry Kenny who had been appointed to the authority was “deemed to have resigned his seat”.

Following 12 hours of debate on Monday last Mayo County Council adopted a budget worth €131,952,449 for the year. The big talking point of the debate among the 31 councillors was the proposal by the council executive to increase water charges to non domestic customers by 10 per cent, an increase that was criticised by members from both sides of the house. Following much negotiation, the adopted budget will see an increase of 6.25 per cent in water charges for year, which was proposed by Fine Gael party whip Councillor Joe Mellet and seconded by party colleague Cllr Eddie Staunton.
